so many good books..
but one in particular comes to mind, "Les Causes Perdues", by Jean-Christophe Rufin. Haven't found an English version. There is one in Swedish though ("Jag hade väntat mig något annat"). It takes place in Eritrea in 1985 during a famine and paints a very interesting picture of the humanitarian sector and how politics can come to play an ugly role. Touches directly on the issue of humanitarian aid prolonging/permantenting vulnerability, in this case in refugee camps. The author started his career in MSF, but has also worked for ACF and French RC (more acronyms...).
Two other good books are "Redemption Road: The Quest for Peace and Justice in Liberia (A Novel)" by Elma Shaw and "A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier", by Ishmael Beah.
Enjoy!
Bought Orbinski
Hello all,
yesterday we bought John's recommended book. It is on our night stand and I am eager to read it. I'll give feedback how it was.
We are now in Nairobi and for some reason we ended up facilitating a lecture about IHL on the seminar!
Dear Kaarina. Wonderful
Dear Kaarina.
Wonderful demonstration of how this forum can be helpful for everyone. I, too, plan on reading this one as soon as things calm down. My colleague James and I will in the coming weeks also come up with additional features for you to connect and share experiences - including some new recommended readings and ways to discuss them.
Also: Great to hear you and Valteri already had a chance to pass on your newly acquired IHL knowledge. Excellent!

Hey girls and guys,
So the PBLI goes online... (as we love accronyms:). Please add readings you think worth to share for our common understanding of the topics and work!
I go first:
JAMES ORBINSKI - "An Imperfect Offering" (good reflection on the link between humanitarian action and political impact.. and on a personal note thoughts of how we as humans should and could act as humanitarians.. with a political impact.. Enjoy the reading!)
